So, you are thinking about your first adventure race and you are wondering, “What should I eat? How often should I drink? If I turn my ankle, is my race over?” These questions often plague the first time adventure racer.

You are getting into a new sport, but not just a new sport, it's a combination of a bunch of sports with which you may, or may not be familiar. Even short adventure races may have an hour of mountain biking, an hour or two of walking/running, nearly an hour of paddling, not to mention the special team challenges mixed in between.

To help alleviate your fears, we are offering some of the best resources around to help prepare you for a fun, new activity. Dr. Cathy Fieseler is a Board Certified Sports Medicine Physician at Trinity Clinic in Tyler, Texas. Dr. Fieseler has agreed to share some of her expertise regarding nutrition and injury prevention/treatment for adventure racers.

Dr. Fieseler graduated from Georgetown University in Washington, DC and completed her residency at Womack Army Hospital in Ft. Bragg, North Carolina and her fellowship in Sports Medicine at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation in Cleveland, Ohio. Having competed in endurance sports herself, gives her some insight on what athletes may encounter before, during and after racing. Being a Sports Medicine Physician gives her the ability to actually help an endurance athlete get, and stay healthy, so they may enjoy their sport for years to come.

We are very happy that Dr. Fieseler has agreed to spend some time with us on Saturday, August 14, 2010 at Tyler State Park. If you would like to schedule some time with her, we encourage you to make an appointment! Her contact information is listed below. Until then, keep training and we will see you in the woods!
